What is Receptive Language?

Receptive language involves listening to others and includes skills like understanding Wh-questions, following directions, labeling, sorting, etc.

What is Expressive Language?

Expressive language focuses on skills like generating complete sentences using correct verb tenses and structures.

Generally speaking, receptive language is about listening to others while expressive language involves talking. Our Speech-Language Pathologist helps your child have a better understanding and appropriate use of language as they both learn to listen and to speak.

What is Apraxia of Speech?

Apraxia of speech is a speech sound disorder. Some children struggle with consistently and correctly making correct speech sounds. Our Speech-Language Pathologist works with your child to strengthen and improve the coordination of the muscles used when speaking to help improve their speech sound production skills and be better understood by listeners.

What is Social Communication?

Social communication allows your child to share their experiences, thoughts and emotions with others.  Through real life and practical practice scenarios, our Speech-Language Pathologist can help your child improve their social skills. These can include conversation and play skills used when interacting with others. Your dedicated speech language pathologist may work with your child on initiating, maintaining, and ending conversations as well as turn-taking and flexibility during play just like in a real life situation. Non-verbal communication (i.e. understanding and using appropriate facial expressions, body language, eye contact) can also be an area of focus as a part of your child’s social communication plan.

What is Fluency?

Fluency is your child’s ability to express themselves easily and articulately. Using a variety of fluency techniques, your Speech-Language Pathologist can help your child to decrease their stutter and improve their fluency of speech and their natural flow of communication interactions.

What are Communication Modalities?

If your child is non-verbal and requires alternative forms of communication, your Speech-Language Pathologist provides specialized assessments to identify the most appropriate approach or device for your child. Our team will assist your family with programming, training, and support in the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices for both your child and you.
