This summer, children at risk for learning loss and social skill development loss had access to a summer camp experience that let them have fun while learning
Situated just outside Cleveland, Ohio, Camp Belong is located on the St. Columbkille School campus and focuses on developing various social and academic skills through creative expression. Like an ordinary summer camp in its activities, Camp Belong differs by being operated by Frazier Behavioral Health, a behavioral health clinic focused on helping neurodiverse children live their best lives.
“Summer camps have always been one of my favorite ways to engage with the kids; I was excited to start another camp of my own design with Camp Belong,” says Allison Frazier, licensed Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and the founder of Camp Belong and Frazier Behavioral Health. “I couldn’t be happier with how camp turned out this year, and I want to thank everyone involved for their hard work and commitment that helped make camp possible.”
In addition to Frazier, this year's team at Camp Belong consisted of licensed intervention specialists, BCBAs who helped kids with social skills or learning differences, and camp counselors, some with similar differences, who received vocational experience. Camp Belong’s unique approach of mixing social skills, education and personal experiences with scientifically-backed interventions is part of the reason behind their success this year.
“The goal of Camp Belong is to give every child who comes to a camp a chance to have a fun, memorable summer experience while reducing summer learning loss,” says Frazier. “Just by looking at how the campers grew this year, I know we succeeded in our goal, and the Camp Belong team is already excited for next year!”
